BRATISLAVA, January 2, (WEBNOVINY) — The outlook for Slovakia’s economy for this year does not necessarily have to be as black as it has seemed over recent months. The Finance Ministry says that signals coming in past weeks for example from Germany, which is Slovakia’s most important trade partner, are even moderately optimistic. „Therefore, we do not see any obvious reasons to worsen our prognosis,“ said Finance Ministry State Secretary Vladimir Tvaroska at Monday’s news conference.
However, this changes nothing with the fact that the ministry will update its predictions already in a month, within a standard cycle where it will turn out what development the department realistically expects this year. „Sometimes in early February we will generate new prognoses that the Finance Ministry led by Ivan Miklos (SDKU-DS) normally publishes,“ specified Tvaroska.
According to its latest prognosis, the Finance Ministry expects Slovakia’s economy to grow 1.7 percent but some analysts warn that the estimate is too optimistic and in the case of a worse development it might have tough impacts on the state budget. Tvaroska admits it. Nevertheless, he said that if the prognoses become reality, problems with meeting the budgeted tax revenue should not occur. “In the event of deteriorated development, it will certainly have a negative impact also on lower tax revenue,” he said.
