Seven of Ten Slovaks are Euro Optimists

BRATISLAVA, March 16, (WEBNOVINY) — Most Slovaks trust the euro and the European Union in spite of skeptical information that has lately been appearing in the media increasingly often. This stems from an on-line survey that TNS Slovakia agency carried out in February on a representative sample of 977 respondents over the age of 15. The survey results suggest that nearly three in four citizens trust the euro, in particular 71.4 percent of Slovak citizens. One in ten respondents said they had full confidence in the euro. One in four citizens does not have confidence in the euro. “What is surprising, the euro lacks confidence among young people (up to 30), women and citizens of small municipalities (population up to 1,000)”, TNS further commented

65-percent of respondents trust the European Union, while one-third does not. Among those most skeptical about the EU are young people (up to 30), women, citizens of small municipalities (population of up to 1,000), students, and childless respondents, as well as people who are not at all interested in economic and financial topics.

Most respondents said in the survey that the euro introduction brought more advantages to Slovakia than disadvantages. Less than two in five respondents, or 37 percent, opine that euro caused more damages than good. Among euro-skeptics are in particular young people, women and respondents who do not read opinion-forming and financial press.
