Qualified Immigrants to Help the Labor Market in Slovakia

BRATISLAVA, August 31, (WEBNOVINY) — Influx of qualified workers from abroad is to help the Slovak labor market as well as the social security system. “Management of economic migration has to firmly respond to challenges of the global competition for talent, in particular by actively searching for them and creating conditions for their arrival to Slovakia,” reads the draft Migration Policy until 2020 from the workroom of the Interior Ministry, which the Cabinet approved on Wednesday. According to the document’s authors, influx of foreign workers is important due to Slovakia’s long-term negative demographic development.

“The basic criterion for admitting foreigners within managed economic migration is their potential for development of the Slovak economy and society, preferring qualified and highly qualified migrants with emphasis on culturally similar countries of origin,” the material reads. According to the material’s authors, it is therefore important to focus on accelerating the process of issuing visas and residence permits. This should be achieved by better coordination of work of embassies and the Foreign Police with the use of ICT, as well as improving language skills of staff working at Foreign Police departments, directly dealing with foreigners.

The material further mentions defining precise rules for admitting qualified and highly qualified immigrants. Analyses of the needs of the national economy and economic benefits of individual groups of economic migrants should be carried out regularly, based on which adoption of regulatory and control mechanisms in order to achieve the required balance in economic migration should be considered.
