Prime Minister: Politics is not Primarily about Power

BRATISLAVA, July 3, (WEBNOVINY) – Politics is not primarily about power, said Prime Minister Iveta Radicova in an interview for SITA news agency.

“Power is an instrument. Politics should be about concrete solutions and decisions, which citizens should be able to measure, feel, perceive after some time. That is my mirror,” the prime minister said in response to the question of whether she looks in the mirror, as her predecessor Robert Fico recommended her upon handing over the office to her. „The media and people show me the mirror most, and that I follow“, she added.

Two weeks ago in Slovenia, the prime minister spoke about people sometimes not understanding reforms. They do not understand why certain steps have to be taken. “Europe is in a terrifying crisis. I don’t want to be telling people on a daily basis how bad it is. I have a duty to look for solutions with the government to gradually overcome it. But to answer your question here I have to tell the truth and that is really bad. The crisis is so huge that we are talking about defaults of countries to which we until recently used to look up as an example of where we want to get. A year or two back perhaps no one would say that Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Greece will fight with existence,” she said. “What exactly is happening? What do we have to resolve? What are we responding to? The gap between the economy, between what people produce in plants every day or what they grow on fields or provide through services on the one hand and promises of politicians on the other is insurmountable. We were living on a huge social mortgage, but no one wants to loan us further for it,” the prime minister noted.

The prime minister opines that behind the situation is irresponsibility of concrete politicians, institutions, banks, rating agencies, and EU institutions. “Who should citizens scold? They scold the government,” Radicova said, adding that today the wrong government is blamed for the situation. She pointed out that her government took over the country with debts in debts in a number of sectors, as well as unpaid invoices.
