President Gasparovic Appoints New Cabinet of Robert Fico

BRATISLAVA, April 4, (WEBNOVINY) — The President of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Gasparovic, has appointed SMER-SD leader Robert Fico new prime minister. This is the second time Robert Fico became prime minister. This is based on the outcome of the March 10 early elections, when his party won the race with 44.41 percent of the vote. The result gives SMER-SD a majority of 83 seats in the 150-member Slovak Parliament. It is for the first time in history of independent Slovakia that its government is formed by a single party.

President Ivan Gasparovic on Wednesday appointed Slovakia’s new Cabinet that has thirteen ministers with Robert Fico at the helm. The one-party Cabinet of the election winner, SMER-SD, has four ministers who are not party members: Miroslav Lajcak, Tomas Borec, Zuzana Zvolenska and Tomas Malatinsky. Martin Glvac has been appointed defense minister, Robert Kalinak interior minister, Peter Kazimir finance minister, and Miroslav Lajcak foreign affairs minister. Tomas Borec leads the Justice Ministry, Jan Pociatek will head the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development and Jan Richter the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Family. Dusan Caplovic has become minister of education, Zuzana Zvolenska health minister. Marek Madaric will stand at the helm of the Culture Ministry, Lubomir Jahnatek of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Peter Ziga will head the Environment Ministry. Tomas Malatinsky has been appointed economy minister. The caretaker mandate of Iveta Radicova’s Cabinet automatically expired with appointment of the new one.
