BRATISLAVA January 11, (WEBNOVINY) — An extraordinary meeting of the Slovak Parliament, which was requested by all five opposition parties, will be held next Wednesday at 11:00. Pavol Chovanec, spokesman said the speaker of parliament told SITA news agency. Opposition MPs have submitted their proposal for an extraordinary session of parliament this Wednesday. They demand that President Ivan Gasparovic explains his decision not to appoint elected candidate Jozef Centes to the post of Prosecutor General. Members of all opposition factions want the session to adopt a resolution regarding the non-appointment of the duly elected candidate Jozef Centes as Prosecutor General. If the opposition does not receive the answers it expects, it is ready to initiate prosecution of the president at the Constitutional Court for an intentional violation of the Constitution. The plan has been initiated by the Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS) and the idea received support from parties associated in the People’s Platform – KDH, MOST-HID, SDKU-DS.
According to the Christian Democrats faction chief Pavol Hrusovsky, MPs have the right to know whether there are legal reasons based on which President Gasparovic does not have to appoint a properly elected candidate for Prosecutor General. „We want him to tell us other reasons than the ones he has stated in his written opinion, because we do not consider those to be such that could lead to non-appointment of the Prosecutor General,“ said Hrusovsky. He pointed out that the president has thus set a precedent as for the first time a parliamentary decision was disrespected by the executive branch of government. „We expect a civil and a presidential position. Let him tell us why for a year and a half he delayed a decision. He should not be playing with confidence in constitutional authorities of the Slovak Republic. All we want is order in relations between constitutional authorities,“ said Hrusovsky.
