BRATISLAVA, June 5, (WEBNOVINY) — Relations between Slovakia and Austria are at a very good level, agreed Presidents of the Slovak Republic and Austria Ivan Gasparovic and Heinz Fischer at a news conference following their talks in Bratislava. The only matter on which the two countries differ is nuclear energy, said President Gasparovic. Slovakia generates 53 percent of its electricity from nuclear power plants, the Slovak president pointed out. Slovakia and Austria agree that safety is a priority in nuclear energy. As President Fischer added, Austria cares not only about the safety of its country, but about the entire Europe.
The Austrian president pointed out that Slovakia and Austria also differ on the position of Kosovo’s independence. He opines that nobody concentrates on taking Kosovo’s independence back at present; on the contrary, European countries concentrate on harmonizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
The two heads of states discussed also some current problems in the European Union and the eurozone. Fischer believes in economic power of most EU members. He opines that countries will try to reverse the development into a positive one. The presidents agree it would be best if Greece remained in the eurozone.
During his brief visit to Slovakia, President Heinz Fischer is to meet with Prime Minister Robert Fico and Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paska. The presidents are to meet again in the afternoon at a Slovak-Austrian business forum.
