BRATISLAVA, January 11, (WEBNOVINY) — Acting director of the new public institution of Slovak Radio and Television (RTVS) Miroslava Zemkova has not ruled out she might run for election of the future RTVS director general. “It is possible that I will be a candidate,” said Zemkova at a press meeting dedicated to the first steps of the acting management of RTVS on Tuesday. Zemkova wants to present a project of management and development of RTVS, which she is currently working on as she considers it to be her commitment. She wants the project to be at least a comparative material. She ruled out being a political candidate. “I was in the post of Director General of the Slovak Radio under three governments. I resisted pressure of all three governments,” underscored Zemkova and reminded that she was in politics many years ago and does not want to be associated with it any more. “I was a member of the Democratic Party for about two years until the party disappointed me and I left in 1994,” said Zemkova and asked: “Will I be referred to as a non-political person only in my next life?”
Zemkova does not think that her chances to succeed in the election of the future RTVS director general would be higher because of her being an acting director of the institution. There are two reasons for that – “Being an acting director, I have less time for elaboration of the project. I spend 12 to 14 hours a day at work. Secondly, it is a political election so I really do not know who will win but I hope I will complete the project and submit it,” she said for the media.
On Monday night, the Parliamentary Media Committee opened the election of officials of RTVS, which emerged from merged Slovak Television and Slovak Radio on January 1. The committee did so on the last possible day in accordance with the law on RTVS – at night on January 10. The Parliamentary Committee for Culture and Media approved calls for enrollment of candidates for RTVS director general and for submission of proposals for candidates of RTVS members. Candidates can submit applications for the post within 15 days until January 25. Candidates who will meet all requirements for the post will be invited for a public hearing. The committee will present the list of candidates together with its statement to parliament within two days after the hearings. Deputies should then decide on the director general in a public vote at the ongoing or next parliamentary session, which is in February or March. The same procedure applies to election of nine members of RTVS Council.
