The Case of Tortured Roma Boys Goes to Court

KOSICE, October 8, (WEBNOVINY)- The Kosice II District Court has accepted the lawsuit in the case of Roma boys who were exposed to police humiliation in March 2009. The court set the date of main court proceedings in the case of nine police officers of whom most have been discharged from the police corps for November 5 and November 26. Policemen have been charged with abuse of power by public officials while four face charges of blackmail. The procurator and all charged persons stated that they are not interested in a plea bargain.

The case of a police video recording from a police station in Kosice showing humiliation and torture of six Roma boys in March stirred great emotions in the nation and among politicians. The boys who were exposed to police humiliating were arrested after they robbed an old lady and were then taken to the police station, where they were forced to strip and slap each other in the face.
