Slovakia's Unemployment Rate was 13.5 Pct Last Year

BRATISLAVA, March 6, (WEBNOVINY) — The unemployment rate in Slovakia decreased by 0.9 percentage points y/y to 13.5 percent last year, according to the data released by the country’s Statistics Office. The number of jobless people dropped 21,100 from 2010 to 367,900 persons. In the fourth quarter of 2011 the average number of unemployed people grew by 4,500 y/y to 381,800. Jobless rate thus surged 0.1 percent y/y in the fourth quarter to 14 percent.

Female unemployment grew 0.3 points over the October-December period to 14.3 percent while male jobless rate dropped 0.1 points to 13.7 percent. Compared with the third quarter in the last three months of 2011 the seasonally adjusted unemployment grew by 19,200 persons to 383,800, informed the Statistics Office.

The growth in unemployment was mirrored also in an increase in absolute figures in the number of people who are without job in the long run (more than a year) to 242,500. The share of these persons on total unemployment however fell 0.5 percentage points to 63.5 percent. The number of short-term unemployed (up to one year) surged as well to 139,300 people.

Regarding economic activities of the last employer, the highest number of unemployed persons worked for the last time in industry (92,300). In this branch also the biggest drop in the number of unemployed was recorded by 13,500. The highest influx of unemployed was in trade and construction industry.

The highest number of jobless was in Kosice and Presov counties, 75,200 and 69,000, respectively. In absolute figures unemployment grew most in Kosice County by 8,900. The number of jobless people dropped most in Bratislava, Trencin, Nitra and Zilina counties. The highest regional jobless rate of 20.1 percent was in Kosice County.
