Slovakia’s Gross Foreign Debt Keeps on Soaring

BRATISLAVA, June 30, (WEBNOVINY) — The gross foreign debt of Slovakia continues rising. Preliminary data of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) shows that Slovakia’s gross foreign debt swelled by USD 2.548 billion to USD 73.367 billion in March, up USD 10.963 billion in yearly terms.

Behind the March increase was particularly USD 1.235-billion growth of the debt in intercompany loans from direct investments to USD 15.712 billion. Other sectors, too, saw a rise in their foreign liabilities. The government’s foreign debt grew USD 492.9 million to USD 16.631 billion and foreign debt of the National Bank of Slovakia swelled by USD 769.5 million to USD 20.377 billion. Liabilities of other entities increased EUR 473.3 million to USD 11.179 billion. Then again, commercial banks reported a debt reduction by USD 422.6 million to USD 9.468 billion.

In a year-over-year comparison, foreign liabilities of the Slovak government grew the most, by USD 5.795 billion. The banking sector saw an increase of USD 1.853 billion and other monitored sectors deepened their foreign debt by USD 1.624 billion. The debt in intercompany lending from direct investments was USD 1.591 billion higher. The central bank reported the mildest debt increase of USD 99.5 million.
