Slovakia Expects Hungary to Honor its Obligations

BRATISLAVA, April 11, (WEBNOVINY) — The Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry issued a statement on Monday, in which it points out that it is aware of the process of preparing a new constitution of Hungary. Slovakia respects the right of every country to be sovereign in defining its constitutional framework. At the same time, the Foreign Affairs Ministry expects that Hungary would behave in accordance to its international obligations it accepted, that it would contribute to good neighborhood relations and that it would respect the constitutional system of other countries, the statement reads.

The Ministry’s statement further underlines the fact that Slovakia’s constitutional system is, in accordance with international law, based on the presumption that in the first place the state in which the minorities live is responsible for respecting and protecting the rights of their members. Protection of the individuals who are members of national minorities in Slovakia is, according to international standards, based on the protection of individual rights.

As the ministry’s press department further informed SITA news agency, in line with its program document, the Slovak government strives to create such environment for members of national minorities, that they would have their real home in Slovakia. In bilateral relations among states, it honors and respects the principles and norms of international law and is interested in good neighborhood relations with Hungary. Slovakia will at the same time consistently refuse attempts to infringe in its sovereignty, including exercising collective rights of the individuals belonging to national minorities.
