BRATISLAVA, May 10, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic is interested how the problems in the current internal political development in Ukraine will be resolved. President Gasparovic spoke about this on the phone with his Ukrainian partner Viktor Yanukovych on Tuesday, May 8, and also today, his spokesman Marek Trubac told SITA news agency.
Their conversation on Thursday, according to Trubac, was „part of an intensive telephone communication in recent days between the presidents of Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine.“ In dialogue with the Ukrainian president, President Gasparovic and President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski proposed changes in Ukrainian legislation, especially the Penal Code and modalities of action to enable medical treatment of [imprisoned] former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko,“ the presidential spokesman said.
According to him, President Yanukovych „confirmed that the legislative process on the amendment has already begun and will soon be submitted to Parliament. Concerning medical treatment of the former prime minister, Yanukovych said that on Wednesday she was transferred to a civilian hospital for treatment under the supervision of a German doctor.“ According to Trubac, President Yanukovych thanked the Slovak and Polish presidents for the opportunity to hold operational discussions and their interest in resolving the current difficulties. „The presidents have agreed that in the future they will continue mutual consultations so as not to disturb the original positive tendency in development of relations between Ukraine and the European Union and its member states,“ said Trubac for SITA.
In response to a mass rejection of invitations, the Ukrainian government is decided to cancel the planned summit of Central European presidents to be held in Yalta over the weekend. In the opinion of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government in Kiev „with regard to the fact that European leaders are unable to attend the summit“ decided to postpone it until a „later date“. Most of the invited presidents declined to participate because of alleged ill-treatment of imprisoned former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
In recent days and weeks, the presidents of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Montenegro, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Hungary, Germany, Austria and Slovenia announced they would not come to the Central European summit. On the contrary, presidents of Poland, Slovakia, and Lithuania confirmed participation. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite wanted to meet with Yulia Tymoshenko, who is serving a seven-year sentence for abuse of powers.
