BRATISLAVA, June 11, (WEBNOVINY)- The Slovak Foreign Ministry has welcomed the European Commission’s suggestion to complete EU accession talks with Croatia. The Commission proposed to set the date of Croatia’s entry for July 1, 2013. The talks should be brought to an end shortly.
„In this association the ministry praises the role of the European Commission but mainly efforts and achievements of Croatia itself, which reached the threshold for the EU membership after almost six years of demanding work and reforms,“ said director of the MFA press department Petra Greksova. Slovakia has supported Zagreb from the beginning of its lengthy accession talks in 2005 and also in the final phase as it has been convinced about Croatia’s ability to fulfill membership conditions. According to the ministry, Croatia will contribute to boosting EU values and improving its competitiveness on the global scene. The ministry believes as well that Croatia’s EU membership will have a positive influence on the situation in the Western Balkans and will stimulate the countries of the region to launch reforms.
To wrap up accession talks with Zagreb, which started in 2005, Brussels had to assess whether Croatia made sufficient progress notably to reform its judiciary, including in the fight against corruption and the processing of war crimes from the 1990s conflict that broke up the former Yugoslavia.
