SIM Card Penetration Reached 116 % in 2011

BRATISLAVA, February 23, (WEBNOVINY) – Mobile services penetration reached 116 percent at the end of 2011 and thus increased by 6 percentage points y/y. As of December 31, 2011, all three Slovak mobile telephony providers Orange, Telekom and O2 had over 6.3 million active SIM cards which is a net y/y increase of 305,000.

As of December 31, Orange had 2.84 million active SIM cards of both pre-paid and post-paid services. Telekom had 2.197 million and O2 1.164 million active SIM cards. The number of O2 clients rose by 284,000 y/y, number of active Orange clients rose by 70,000. On the other hand, the number of active Telekom SIM cards dropped by 49,000. These numbers also include clients of virtual operators Nay Mobile, Swan Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Mphone and FunFon which use networks of the three major providers.

The data on penetration of mobile services is calculated upon the number of SIM cards of clients using post-paid services and of clients using pre-paid who used their phone at least once in the last three months. According to the statistic, 100 percent is the number of Slovak citizens – 5.44 million.

SIM cards are used for various purposes which makes it impossible to consider each user a single client – operating GSM gates, e-toll, localizing services, alarms, CCTVs and other.
