BRATISLAVA, February 9, (WEBNOVINY) – The elementary word that characterized the fifth election term was the crisis, said Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrusovsky (KDH) at the end of the twenty-eight parliamentary session supposed to be the last one this election term. “The crisis of the international financial and economic system is reflected on us, too. Also crisis of the political system, moral, interpersonal relations, political culture and political debate and eventually also constitutional crisis, which culminated in cutting the election term and announcing early elections,” Hrusovsky said at the end of the last scheduled parliamentary session in the current election term on Thursday. The speaker of parliament is convinced that in spite of the difficulties, the parliament fulfilled its role of a legislative body.

Hrusovsky went on to say that the next Parliament will have a difficult task to prevent the crisis from undermining democratic institutions and preserve the public’s trust in operation of constitutional mechanisms.

This election term, lawmakers approved 206 bills, whereas 176 submitted by Cabinet, 26 by deputies and four by parliamentary committees, informed the speaker of parliament. He in particular thanked deputies for approving the constitutional bill on budgetary responsibility, which got support of all parliamentary parties.

Before the last parliamentary session started, Hrusovsky announced that if needed, for instance if the president vetoes any of the approved bills, he will convene one more session before March 10 early elections. Otherwise, newly-elected deputies should meet within thirty days from the elections.
