Number of Organ Transplants in Slovakia Shrank Last Year

BRATISLAVA, February 6, (WEBNOVINY) – The number of transplant operations last year reached 176, 45 fewer than in 2010. The number of kidney transplants fell from 167 to 132 and the number of heart transplants from twenty-one to nineteen. The number of liver transplants decreased from thirty-three to twenty-five, according to a report on meeting the National Transplant Program for 2011. The Cabinet is to have it on the table soon.

Despite the results for last year, the material states that a considerable qualitative and quantitative progress has been achieved in organ transplantology over the last five years, while Slovakia has achieved a level similar to surrounding developed countries. „If we assess the tendency of the last ten years, a considerable growth of liver transplants has been reported, along with a growth in the number of other organ transplants. The trend is clearly positive,” the report states.

The report also positively evaluates the effort to gradually reduce the number of transplant operations of Slovaks carried out abroad with the aim to improve efficiency of the use of finances as well as expertise of Slovak health care employees in transplantology. Based on the published data, the growing tendency in cell transplant operations continues, while last year has thus far been the most successful with regard to the number of hematopoietic stem cell transplants.
