BRATISLAVA, May 28, (WEBNOVINY) — Fight against tax evasion will be one of the pillars of consolidation of public finances in Slovakia, said Prime Minister Robert Fico. Specifically in this area the Cabinet wants to cooperate with the banking sector. Representatives of banks offered to the government on Monday talks and technical solutions that could help reduce evasion of value-added tax (VAT). The Cabinet will discuss specific proposals to eliminate tax evasion on Thursday. „If we combined it with technical solutions, about which we spoke with representatives of banks today, I think we could be able to stop a part of the VAT tax evasion,“ Fico said on Monday.

Neither the representatives of banks nor the Prime Minister provided details of possible measures in the banking sector that could reduce tax evasion. Prime Minister Fico hinted that technical solutions should include checking the flow of money. According to Fico, it is currently unclear whether these measures would require changes in legislation, or could be implemented directly in the banking sector.

The President of the Slovak Banking Association, Igor Vida, said that banks have a clear idea of how they could help achieve greater efficiency in VAT collection. He too would want to make premature conclusions and said negotiations of representatives of banks and the Finance Ministry of the tax administration would follow. „We agreed we would cooperate in this area,“ Vida said after talks.
