BRATISLAVA, January 14, (WEBNOVINY)- On his official visit to Vienna on Monday Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that though the departure of Greece from the eurozone would notably influence Slovakia’s economy we cannot tolerate in the long run irresponsibility and the failure to put public finances in order. He insisted that if countries continue irresponsible policy they threaten all of us. He warned that maybe we will be forced to seek last-resort solutions that can leave short-term negative imprints on the economies for a certain time. Fico holds the opinion that if the country is not able to tidy its public finances he would prefer its departure from the euro-club.
People in a country where it is common to earn 550 or 600 euros, which is the most common pay can hardly cope with Slovakia’s participation in rescue missions,” said Fico. According to the Slovak prime minister, however we get more than we give from the EU and we cannot only “stretch our hands” but we expect that Greece will thoroughly do its homework. However, Fico thinks that the country has the worst behind it and the second half of this year should also bring about an improvement of the economic situation.
Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann however made more moderate statements than his Slovak guest. “I am happy that the eurozone is integrated for now. I believe that if we push one country out of the eurozone it would mean a loss of confidence, he said. However also Austrians say they are willing to help but they want to see realistic efforts. Faymann rejoices at reports saying that Greece has already started fulfilling some of its commitments.
