BRATISLAVA, June 10, (WEBNOVINY) — Employment in industry grew 5.4 percent in annual terms in the fourth month of this year. According to the figures released by the Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic, the number of employees in the ICT sector rose 16 percent y/y in April. Employment in the sector of selected market services grew 4.8 percent, in the sector of transport and storage 4.4 percent, in retail 1.6 percent and in restaurant and pub services 0.7 percent. Other monitored sectors had fewer employees in a year-over-year comparison. The steepest decline of the number of employees was seen in the construction sector, amounting to 4.2 percent.
Industry gave work to 498,600 people in the fourth month, with 450,400 working in industrial manufacturing. The building industry had 172,300 employees, the retail sector 153,600, and selected market services 125,900 people. The sectors of transportation and storage employed 112,600 persons, wholesale 94,600 and the ICT sector 38,500 employees. Restaurant and pubs registered 28,700 employees, distribution and repairs of motor vehicles 21,000 workers, and accommodation services 9,400 staffers.
Compared with the January-April period of last year, employment increased 14.9 percent in the ICT sector over the four months of 2011, 5.3 percent in industry, 4.9 percent in selected market services, 1 percent in transportation and storage, and 0.4 percent in retail. On the contrary, employment declined in the construction sector by 3.4 percent, in accommodation by 2.5 percent, in the wholesale sector by 1.4 percent, in the area of distribution and repairs of motor vehicles by 1.2 percent, and in restaurants and pubs by 0.9 percent.
In 2010, employment posted a drop in all monitored branches. In industry, the number of staffers went down 3.8 percent y/y. However, the number of the employed fell most considerably in the ICT sector, by 11.6 percent y/y.
