ZILINA, March 1, (WEBNOVINY) — Miroslav R., a judge from Poprad in northern Slovakia, accused of illegal possession of firearms and drugs, was acquitted by the Regional Court in Zilina on Thursday. „The suspect was acquitted because the Regional Court is convinced that in this particular situation the deeds were not criminal offenses. The decision is final, “ said a spokeswoman for the Regional Court in Zilina.
In a trial lasting nearly twelve years, the District Court three times found the suspect guilty and twice sentenced him to a year in prison and once gave him a suspended sentence. The accused judge from Poprad has always appealed the verdicts. The most recent guilty verdict in this case was handed down by the District Court in Zilina in May of last year with one year suspended sentence.
In July 1999, a police patrol in Kosice pulled over the car driven by the judge from Poprad and found him in possession of 16.8 grams of cocaine mixture and an illegal rifle with four bullets. Miroslav R. always pleaded he was innocent. He consistently maintained at his trials that at most he could have committed the crime of connivance and failure to report a crime. He however refused to disclose where the cocaine and the rifle came from. He only admitted that he obtained it in a building in Kosice where his son was staying as a university student.
