BRATISLAVA, November 10, (WEBNOVINY) — Every one of the four center-right ruling coalition parties in Slovakia proposed its candidate for the office of prosecutor general at a working group meeting today. “We are looking for the best possible solution. We decided to make no names of the proposed candidates public so that we can solve this issue responsibly. We will meet again on Friday and we all wish to tell you the name of the candidate on whom we all agreed,” said the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrusovsky (KDH) after the meeting. Hrusovsky emphasized that they do not want to politicize the election and he wishes that the representatives of all four coalition parties – SDKU-DS, SaS, KDH and MOST-HID come to an agreement on one joint prosecutor general nominee this Friday. His or her name should be approved by the Coalition Council on Monday.
“I think that the group we will be choosing from is sufficient and above all of high quality,” said Jozef Kollar, the SaS parliamentary faction chairman. MOST-HID MP Gabor Gal agrees. “It’s not good to make any names public. I am convinced we should respect the individual candidates. They all are nominees of high quality and it would not be good if they were possibly associated with a political party before the coalition agrees on them. We are looking for a joint candidate of the coalition,” said the Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska.
Hrusovsky stressed that individual MPs cannot be prohibited from nominating their own candidates. According to him, the interest in finding a joint candidate is a rather political wish.
Two rounds of a parliamentary vote earlier this month failed to elect a new prosecutor general. The term in office of Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka ends in February.
