Electricity prices for Slovak households and industry should fall. The Regulatory Office for Network Industries (URSO) has already announced that it has decided to adjust the method of calculating the settlement price of the deviation of settlement entities. The regulator wants to take action against traders who intentionally cause deviations in the energy system in order to abuse the current situation in the area of using the mechanism of the PICASSO and MARI platforms introduced by the European Union. According to the regulatory authority, deviation should no longer be a business. The URSO is already moving towards a fair decision. After the adoption of measures, payments for deviation will be reduced, which will lower the final price of electricity for households and industry and it will also have a positive impact on the state budget of the Slovak Republic.
„The Office has decided to take action because speculative practices are beginning to intensify, resulting in the deliberate enrichment of some market participants at the expense of unsuspecting consumers,“ said Jozef Holjencik, Chairman of the URSO. According to him, the URSO perceives that the announced payments for deviation affect all participants in the electricity market. The final decision will therefore sensitively take into account the impacts on individual entities. The URSO also rejects media attacks that are not supported by any expert analyses or facts. „The Office has decided to take action against speculation by traders in the electricity market by forcing them to behave responsibly in their estimates of consumption or production. The practical result will be a reduction in payments for deviation, which is directly part of the final price of electricity itself. These changes will therefore ultimately have a positive impact on electricity prices,“ stated Holjencik.
According to him, the regulator continues to conduct expert consultations with market participants with the aim of thoroughly analyzing the possible impacts of the measures on all market participants. The URSO is therefore considering postponing the effectiveness of the measures to September 1, 2025 to create space for further expert debate.
