Survey Shows SMER Would Win Elections in October

BRATISLAVA, October 21, (WEBNOVINY) – Were parliamentary elections held this weekend in Slovakia, the opposition party SMER-SD would be the winner, with support of 40 percent of potential voters. The ruling SDKU-DS would end up second with 18 percent and its partner in the ruling coalition, the SaS would follow with 8.5 percent, shows a survey conducted by the Focus agency on a sample of 1,033 respondents from October 5 to October 11.

Sixteen percent of those polled said they would not go to polling stations while 13 7 percent could not or did not want to answer the question.

The opposition SNS with 7.8 percent of the vote is the fourth party to make it to parliament in October, which is a better result than that from September (6.1 percent) and July (6.2 percent). The ruling KDH with 7.24 percent and another coalition party, the MOST-HID with 6.8 percent would have their representatives in parliament, too. However, the SMK would stay away from parliament as the party harvested 4.8 percent and failed to meet the 5-percent requirement for getting into parliament. The LS-HZDS with 3.7 percent would not get to parliament, too.

SMER-SD would win 68 deputy mandates, the SDKU-DS 31 and the SaS 14. The SNS and KDH would have 13 MPs each and MOST-HID would be entitled to 11 chairs in the 150-seat Slovak Parliament.
