BRATISLAVA, June 14, (WEBNOVINY) — Opposition parties have a chance to gain approval in the Slovak Parliament for their proposals for consolidation of public finances or for boosting economic growth, stated Prime Minister Robert Fico after Thursday’s meeting with leaders of the opposition parties. He explained that the government does not want to look at opposition proposals politically, but ideologically. The government will assess whether they meet the purpose for which they were submitted and whether they are in accordance with the government’s program statement, the prime minister further said.
„We can say already today that some individual proposals that have been presented may gain support of the SMER-SD deputy faction,” Fico stated after the meeting. He went on to say that the Finance Ministry will assist the opposition with their proposals by calculating their impact on public funds.
The prime minister further agreed with representatives of the opposition that he would present to them next Monday a complete list of consolidation measures. The Cabinet wants to provide the opposition a full picture of the prepared fiscal consolidation. Fico admitted that these proposals may yet be amended in the legislative process in parliament. If the opposition proposes changes that make sense, they could be accepted.
Fico said also the opposition agreed that eliminating tax evasion may not be considered a source of consolidation in the next two years. Despite that, both sides consider this topic a priority.
