New Radioactive Waste Storage Facility is Planned

BRATISLAVA, October 4, (WEBNOVINY) — The nuclear decommissioning company Jadrova Vyradovacia Spolocnost, a.s. (JAVYS) plans to build a facility for a long-term storage of institutional radioactive waste and radioactive materials in Mochovce, western Slovakia. It will invest more than EUR 2 million into the facility that will also handle and sort the waste. According to information on the appril.com portal, the construction should start in May of next year and be completed at the end of the year.

The new facility in Mochovce should offer space for storing approximately twenty tons of radioactive materials. JAVYS stated in the investment plan that such complex facility for handling radioactive waste has long been missing in Slovakia. The investment plans have already been submitted for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The construction will help preserve sixteen jobs and create one new.

The nuclear decommissioning company JAVYS originated by renaming the company GovCo, a.s., which took over the responsibility for operation of the nuclear power plant V1 in Jaslovske Bohunice from April 1, 2006 based on a Cabinet decision on privatization of a 66-percent stake in power utility Slovenske elektrarne, a.s. GovCo originated on July 6, 2005 with the government as its only shareholder represented by the Economy Ministry. In addition to V1 in Jaslovske Bohunice, GovCo also assumed responsibility for decommissioning of nuclear energy installations and handling radioactive waste and used nuclear fuel. The company shut down two units of NPP V1 at the end of 2006 and 2008 respectively.
