Harmonized Inflation in January Accelerates to 3.2 Pct

BRATISLAVA, February 28, (WEBNOVINY) – Consumer prices in Slovakia measured by the harmonized index of the European Union rose 3.2 percent year-on-year in January of this year, according to data of the Slovak Statistics Office. Harmonized inflation in December was 1.3 percent. Average annual inflation rate in January thus increased 0.3 percentage points from December to 1 percent. In a month-on-month comparison, consumer prices in January swelled from December by 2.1 percent, while in December they increased by 0.2 percent from November.

Year-on-year, prices of food and soft drinks rose the most, by 6.1 percent in the first month. Next were prices of housing, water, electricity, natural gas and other fuels, rising by 5.8 percent. Prices in education went up 4.5 percent, while the increase in transport was 4 percent, in health care 3.6 percent, in the sector of miscellaneous goods and services 3 percent, in hotels, cafes and restaurants, as well as alcoholic beverages and tobacco 2 percent. .A moderate growth of 0.9 percent was reported in prices of recreation and culture and of 0.5 percent in postal and telecommunications services. Prices of furniture, household equipment and routine household maintenance were 2.3 percent lower year-on-year, while prices of clothing and footwear declined by 0.7 percent.

On a monthly basis, prices of housing and energies rose the most, by 5.2 percent. Transport prices went up 3.3 percent, prices of foodstuffs and soft drinks 2.6 percent, health care 1.6 percent, miscellaneous goods and services 1.2 percent. Hotels, cafes, and restaurants saw a price growth of 0.8 percent, posts and telecommunications of 0.6 percent, recreation and culture of 0.4 percent, education of 0.3 percent, and furniture, household equipment and routine household maintenance of 0.1 percent. In contrast, prices of footwear and clothing decreased by 1.4 percent.
