Half of Unemployed Slovaks are Without a Job for Over a Year

BRATISLAVA, January 27, (WEBNOVINY) — Offices of labor and social affairs registered nearly 188,600 long-term unemployed persons as of the end of last year. Those are persons who have been jobless for over one year. The number increased by almost 3,900 on the previous year. The highest number of people jobless for over one year was in eastern Slovakia at the end of last year. In Presov County, their number totaled 43,700 and in Kosice County close to 41,200. On the other hand, the smallest number of long-term unemployed persons was in Bratislava and Trnava Counties in late December, namely almost 4,900 in Bratislava and nearly 9,900 in Trnava County. This stems from statistical data disclosed by the Central Office for Labor, Social Affairs and Family.

At the end of last year, nearly 54,500 people have been without a job for more than four years. The highest number of such people was in Banska Bystrica county (14,600), followed by Presov and Kosice counties in eastern Slovakia.

On the whole, 399,800 people were jobless in December, which is an increase by 6,678 persons on the previous month and 18,591 persons on the previous year. The unemployment rate calculated from the overall number of jobseekers last year reached 14.99 percent at the end of 2011.
