BRATISLAVA, February 1, (WEBNOVINY) — On Tuesday, lawmakers broke the president’s veto of the amended school bill from the workroom of the Education Ministry which is to introduce English as mandatory subject at schools. Deputies did not accept the president’s argument that introduction of mandatory English is not a good step and pupils should be able to choose what foreign language they want to learn. English will be taught at all elementary schools in Slovakia from September, but the law does not define from what year. The norm does not introduce obligatory English high-school graduation exam.
The amended school law is to take effect on March 1 of this year. It also cancels issuing mid-term school report cards. It also introduces Braille transcription of existing and new textbooks.
