Popularity of SMER-SD Breaks All Records

BRATISLAVA, September 6, (WEBNOVINY) — Popularity of the strongest political party in Slovakia, the opposition SMER-SD of former Prime Minister Robert Fico has soared almost six percentage points in August. SMER-SD, which won the elections this June with 34.8 percent of the vote scored over 40 percent in August, according to the latest survey conducted by the polling agency Median SK. The agency surveyed 1,018 respondents between July 19 and August 15. In May, 33.5 percent would have supported the party of Robert Fico, according to a survey by the same agency. Despite the election result, SMER-SD was unable to form a government and ended up in the opposition, as it could not find a coalition partner.

The survey shows that the composition of Slovak Parliament would remain the same in August while popularity of current parliamentary parties, except for the KDH was almost identical with the results in June elections. The SDKU-DS would win 15.2 percent of the vote in August, the SaS 11.9 percent, MOST-HID 7.6 percent and the SNS five percent. The August survey was the reason to rejoice for the KDH, which got 8.5 percent in the June elections while in August, 10 percent of the electorate would vote for it. The LS-HZDS, which was a member of the previous ruling coalition would not make it to parliamentary according to the August survey when its support shrank to below 4 percent .The SDL with 2 percent overtook the SMK with a mere 1.3 percent. Further political parties garnered less than one percent.

Almost 70 percent of those polled would come to the polling stations in August while over 29 percent said they would not take part in the elections.
