BRATISLAVA, October 28, (WEBNOVINY) — Exactly ninety-two years ago on this day, the Republic of Czechoslovakia was founded on October 28, 1918, a date that is still celebrated as a national holiday in the Czech Republic. The first Czechoslovak Republic survived for just twenty years, brought to an abrupt end by the Munich Agreement of September 1938, followed six months later by German occupation of what remained of the Czech Lands and the establishment of the wartime fascist Slovak State. The Czechoslovak Republic was then restored after the end of World War II.
The strongest party in the governing coalition, the SDKU-DS, released a statement revering the democratic traditions of the first Czechoslovak Republic, with founding of which the Slovaks became part of the family of modern democratic nations.
