KOSICE, January 3, (WEBNOVINY) — The police have detained a man who detonated an improvised remote initiated explosive device last Wednesday evening in front of a fast food restaurant in Kosice. Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic informed the media on the case on Tuesday. “In a record short time, the police in Kosice detained the offender who threatened the public and clients of the restaurant by the explosive device,” said the minister.
Lipsic specified that the offender is a 32 years old man from Kosice district. The man who lives with his parents has a criminal history with past prison sentences. The minister said he wants to praise work done by Kosice police. He considers the detention of the perpetrator a great success given that it was the crime of „a lone wolf“ while it is very difficult to clarify such cases. It is a record that the criminal police managed to identify the offender that expressly. During the following house search, officers discovered more components that can be used to make improvised explosive devices, components for making a bomb, two farewell letters and a last will, which indicates according to the minister that the offender wanted to continue his dangerous activities. The police do not rule out that he was plotting a suicide attack, said the minister. He believes that the police managed to protect inhabitants from a possible future attack.
An improvised explosive device set off electronically and filled with nails exploded last Wednesday evening in front of a McDonald’s fast-food restaurant in the eastern Slovak metropolis of Kosice. The device, placed in a metal trash bin next to the entrance of the restaurant, went on at 1720 CET without wounding anyone. The perpetrator of the attack can be sentenced to up to ten years in prison.
