BRATISLAVA, October 28, (WEBNOVINY) — According to its chairman Bela Bugar, the party MOST-HID is ready to support Jan Hrivnak in the Prosecutor General election in parliament – everything depends on agreement within the coalition. The liberal SaS party does not exclude the possibility of changing its attitude towards candidates. As Bugar said for SITA news agency, the last possible date for reaching an agreement in the coalition is next Tuesday, when the Coalition Council is to meet over the Prosecutor General election. “The Coalition Council is the last chance for us to reach an agreement. SDKU-DS did not provide a definite statement on its position on Wednesday, although I expected them to do so,” said Bugar.
Jozef Kollar, SaS parliamentary faction chairman, believes there still is a chance for an agreement at the Coalition Council. After it ends, he is up to call the faction together. “We still can guarantee our votes for Eva Misikova,” he answered a SITA question about whether he can imagine his party supporting Hrivnak. Kollar regrets that no clear position on this issue came from the SDKU-DS Presidium meeting on Wednesday. “What if the deputies will be behaving like this when dealing with the state budget, that’s beyond my imagination,” he added.
The Parliament will elect a new Prosecutor General on November 3. The issue divided the coalition: SaS, KDH and MOST-HID nominated Eva Misikova for the office; SDKU-DS does not have a candidate, yet there are two individual nominations from the party’s MPs, nominating Jan Hrivnak and Dobroslav Trnka. Trnka, the incumbent Prosecutor General whose seven-year term ends in early 2011, was also nominated by the opposition SMER-SD MP Mojmir Mamojka.
The discussion on Prosecutor General candidates within the SDKU-DS came to no conclusion on the party’s presidency meeting this Wednesday. “We of course are fully aware that both nomination and voting is fully in the hands of parliamentary factions and the MPs. That’s why we discussed on the method how to reach such a conclusion that the MPs will be able to decide not only as freely as one can, but also as responsibly as possible,” said party chairman Mikulas Dzurinda after the discussion. The talks will continue next Tuesday when Prime Minister Iveta Radicova, ministers and party leaders are to meet with the MPs. They also consider inviting candidates for the Prosecutor General office. Dzurinda believes they will reach a conclusion which will not only lead to free and accountable decisions of the SDKU-DS MPs, but will also contribute to the stability of the ruling coalition.
