BRATISLAVA, August 24, (WEBNOVINY) — On Wednesday, President Ivan Gasparovic is to appoint Karol Mitrik to the post of director of Slovakia’s intelligence service the SIS. The Cabinet approved the nomination of former parliamentary deputy and mayor of Spisska Nova Ves to the post on July 21. The president was waiting for the required security clearance, which Mitrik had to undergo. Prime Minister Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) does not see a problem in Mitrik’s deposition at a trial in the case of former deputy mayor of Kosice Eugen Cana. According to Radicova, Mitrik did not commit perjury. Mitrik, a founding member of the SDKU-DS party, provided an alibi for Eugen C, who was charged with bribery, but the court did not believe his testimony.

Karol Mitrik will replace Jozef Magala, who was appointed to the post of SIS head in 2006 and was a nominee of the SMER-SD party led by ex-prime minister Robert Fico.
