BRATISLAVA, April 27, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) does not think, that Slovakia should amend its constitution, as the opposition SMER-SD proposed after Hungary adopted a new constitution with apparent extraterritorial implications. “To change the constitution of Slovakia because of the changes to the constitution in Hungary is a sign of weakness. I don’t think that when a leaf moves in Hungary, we have to change the fundamental law,” said the prime minister on Wednesday. She also refused claims of Robert Fico, according to whom she promised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban not to criticize their new constitution in the public.
“The deal was that we will not communicate across the Danube, which means through the media. A deal on the Slovak Parliament or the Slovak Cabinet not to take any position to this constitution, does not and never has existed, as it already twice issued its critical remarks, ” Radicova pointed out. Accusations from the opposition leader do not make her feel sad, but rather arouse compassion. “It begins to be funny. I’m starting to feel sorry for that Mr. Fico,” she stated.
SMER-SD Deputy Chairman Marek Madaric announced this Wednesday, that his party’s MPs will submit a draft amendment to the constitution to the Slovak Parliament this week. They would like the amendment to literally emphasize that Slovakia does not recognize collective, only individual rights of national minorities’ members. Parliament should discuss the draft on its next session, which is to start on May 17.
