POPRAD, June 18, (WEBNOVINY) – The election of new prosecutor general dominated the opening speech of SDKU-DS Chairman Mikulas Dzurinda at the meeting of the party leadership in Poprad on Saturday. “It is very good that we decided for a change,” said Dzurinda, adding that it means there is will to change things in Slovakia for the better. According to him, electing a new prosecutor general will help increase law enforceability in Slovakia. Dzurinda pointed out that big changes have been implemented in the country in the last twenty years, with the exception of the judiciary. “We tolerate that the prosecution often decides without properly justifying its decision,” Dzurinda said, adding that it sometimes seems that the prosecution uses different standards.
The last decisions of the Constitutional Court regarding the public vote of the prosecutor general were political and partisan, the SDKU-DS leader alleged. The respective judges were pushing Slovakia into a state of legal vacuum, he added. „We have to reject acts of any democratic institution that destabilizes or disrespects real principles of the constitution and law,“ he said. Dzurinda noted he was sorry that some judges of the Constitutional Court, elected to the posts thanks to being members of the SMER-SD party, are now repaying for being elected.
The past year has been complicated for Slovakia, but also a year of hopes, said Dzurinda, adding that the party has shown responsibility in the first year in government.
