Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico believes that those who will have their own sources of electricity will be able to survive in the coming period. He estimates that electricity consumption may soon increase by 80%.

„But to have one’s own resources is also a power and strategic issue. Times will only get worse, never better, and a country that will have technologies that generate electricity will be able to survive those tough times,“ Fico told a press conference.

According to him, also this is the reason why the government decided this year to continue with the project to build a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice. Partners from South Korea could also help with the construction of a new nuclear plant.

Prime Minister Robert Fico and Economy Minister Denisa Sakova are therefore departing for South Korea to negotiate there about this project.

„There are not many partners in the world who produce the relevant technology. This is not an apple you can buy in every district town. We basically have four countries with which we can discuss these issues. It is the Russian Federation, we can communicate with American companies, French companies, and we can communicate with South Korea. Therefore, the decision was made that regarding the construction of a completely new resource we are starting to communicate with those countries that come into consideration,“ said Fico.

Slovak government officials want to sign a memorandum with the Korean side on cooperation in the field of energy and new technologies.

„We want to conclude that South Korea is one of our potential partners in this project. We will definitely talk with the French and also with the United States,“ Fico noted. He is not at all worried about the financing of this project.

„A nuclear power plant is a money machine,“ emphasized Fico, who wants to fund the construction of a new nuclear plant from external sources.

The premier is glad that his coalition partners are courageous enough to embark on the construction of a brand-new nuclear power plant in Slovakia.

„The government made a decision that we want to build a new nuclear power plant. We decided that we want to build this nuclear source in Jaslovske Bohunice. We also decided that we would like this resource to be exclusively owned by the Slovak Republic once built. In terms of its power, we are talking about capacity of 1,100 to 1,200 megawatts, which is basically three times the standard reactor we currently use,“ stated Fico.

According to Fico, all decisions regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice should be made by the end of 2027, before the mandate of his government ends.

„Who will be the supplier, what will be the participation of Slovak companies, how it all will be financed. I am really convinced that it is possible,“ concluded Fico.
