BRATISLAVA/BRUSSELS, September 21, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak Defense Minister Lubomir Galko told NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in Brussels on Monday that Slovakia will have to partly reassess the previous government’s commitment to double the contingent of the Slovak Republic in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, „We want to boost the contingent of the Slovak Armed Forces in the operation in the coming period, while we want to focus in particular on enhancing our contribution to training of Afghan security forces,” said the minister as cited by his spokesman Richard Sumeghy.

Galko gave assurances to the NATO Secretary General that despite the complicated economic situation, the Slovak Republic will maintain the current scope of participation in the alliance’s operations. The current government will keep its promises to the alliance regarding participation in international crisis management operations and will also provide respective financial coverage, the defense minister underscored in Brussels. Galko also confirmed Slovakia’s plan to terminate the operation of its troops in the KFOR operation in Kosovo by the end of this year.
