BRATISLAVA, December 14, (WEBNOVINY) – According to the opposition SMER-SD party leader Robert Fico, the public should not attribute any importance to statements of the Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik on a ‘Plan B’ for reintroducing the Slovak crown. SMER-SD considers these statements to be irresponsible, harmful, and threatening for the stability of the euro on the territory of Slovakia. “He has to consider and reconsider every single word he says, because he knows that it influences at least the internal situation in Slovakia,” said Fico at a news conference on Tuesday.
SMER considers the euro to be one of the most important successes of Slovakia and according to Fico, his party supports the efforts of euro zone countries to maintain the value of the common currency as well as the perspective of the euro zone. “Euro is the only perspective we have,” Fico stated. According to him SMER perceives the anti-European positions of the incumbent Cabinet’s representatives with concerns. “Once again Mr. Sulik has shown that he is the curse of Slovakia’s political system,” Fico added.
In a column in Hospodarske noviny daily on Monday, the Speaker of Parliament and SaS party Chairman Richard Sulik wrote that Slovakia should stop blindly trusting the euro zone leaders and prepare a ‘Plan B’ for reintroducing the Slovak crown. “We are a country too small to influence actions of the European Union significantly; so at least we have to protect the values that the people living in Slovakia created,” Sulik wrote.
The Minister of Finance, Ivan Miklos, considers returning to using the Slovak crown to be theoretically possible. He however added that he would not like to speculate about reintroducing the crown. “It is theoretically possible. We have already switched from the Czechoslovak crown to the Slovak crown. But neither the costs nor impacts would be negligible or easy,” said Miklos for the Novy Cas daily. He considers the situation in the euro zone to be serious, yet he does not think there is a threat of its dissolution.
