BRATISLAVA, August 26, (WEBNOVINY) — In their work on formation of laws and society, politicians should bear in mind the message of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) [of August 1944], too, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Labor Minister Jozef Mihal (SaS). Speaking at a ceremony on the occasion of the sixty-seventh anniversary of SNP in Bratislava on Friday, Mihal went on to say that politicians should not opt for simple solutions via adopting attractive, but short-sighted decisions. “We are obliged to put up with criticism for unpopular, but responsible and inevitable reforms,” Mihal added. He reminded that a lot of people joined the uprising knowing that they might not live to see freedom, poorly armed, but with much stronger determination they started the fight, outnumbered by Nazi troops. This message has been forming our society to date, Mihal said. The minister added that instead of taking the road of lesser resistance, we should always face up to violence and injustice, and even sacrifice a life for moral values. Only then a person and the whole nation will be able to proudly look in the mirror, he said.
The values of freedom and democracy, for which SNP participants fought, are universal and apply to present-day soldiers, too, said Defense Minister Lubomir Galko (SaS). “Through their everyday work, they support, maintain and stabilize peace in various parts of the planet, while creating a safer world,” Galko stated.
