BRATISLAVA, December 22, (WEBNOVINY) — „Dealing with corruption by corrupting people is a similar solution as if we wanted to heal an illness by another illness. I consider informers to be the scum in society, worms who deserve nothing but contempt. And not a reward at all, said Andrej Danko, the first vice-chairman of the opposition SNS regarding the proposal of Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic to include the possibility of rewarding those who saved public funds by uncovering illegal actions into the prepared law on protection of whistleblowers. “Rewarding narks is perverse. ‘Nark’ is a word and a concept in the Slovak language linked to the worst kind of people who misuse information gained in any way with an intent of personal gain,” said Danko. He thinks that such people might often make use of possibilities initiated by the Interior Minister in order to solve their private problems, which is dangerous for society. “This group of people, as the lowest caste of all mankind, is able of doing anything for money – even betray the trust of a friend, of family, of their dear ones,” continued Danko. He underlined the duty of every citizen to act voluntarily and without any entitlement to a reward in the case that he or she knows of a criminal offense.

The only solution of fighting crime is making the police work better, Danko says. He suggests improving the relations between the criminal police and the investigators so that they cooperate instead of competing.

On Tuesday, Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic (KDH) suggested that the whistleblowers who uncover illegal conduct, inform for example on corruption, could get paid in the future, in the case that their accusations can be proven and this would help saving public money. “It seems to us that it is important that people have the courage to inform and to testify,” he explained during his visit to the Office to Fight Corruption. Motivating whistleblowers financially could become a part of the new legislation on protecting the people who inform the state authorities about illegal conduct.
