BRATISLAVA, February 17, (WEBNOVINY) – Miloslava Zemkova has been officially appointed head of the new public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) on Thursday. Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik has ceremonially handed over letters of appointment to Zemkova and nine members of the RTVS Council in the historical building of Slovak Parliament. Sulik congratulated the new director and the council members on their election. According to him, the parliament has created a legislative framework for RTVS for its good service to viewers and listeners. He believes that RTVS will operate efficiently and will offer an attractive program and balanced news reporting.
The most difficult task ahead of the broadcaster will be to set up its balanced performance, said Sulik. “There is a huge amount of contracts that are overpriced, and cannot be terminated. To put this together, that are hundreds of contracts, will be a lot of work,” he told the media.
Miloslava Zemkova expects the RTVS Council to actively cooperate with management. The first council session should be held in the second week of March. Miroslav Kollar is head of the council for a two-year term when eight members supported his candidacy and one refrained from voting.
RTVS was established on January 1 of this year be merger of the Slovak Television and Slovak Radio. Zemkova is the first head of the medium. She was elected to the post on February 10 in a public vote for a five-year election term. After her election, Zemkova said that the situation in RTVS is critical and it will not be possible to resolve it without a helping hand of the state. Up to the date, the debt is 18 million euro. The losses amount to some 43 million euro, excluding the losses of subsidiaries.
