BRATISLAVA, September 26, (WEBNOVINY) — In an interview for the Croatian newspaper Vjesnik during her visit to the country, Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova stated that any formation of a fiscal union in the EU would have to be based on a decision of citizens. As the press department of the Cabinet Office further informed, Radicova also said that specific solutions and agreements in this field would only be realistic in a longer-term horizon, as either the Lisbon Treaty would have to be amended or a new treaty adopted, subject to approval by member states.

“Among the discussed solutions, we for example support the rule on a debt cap whereas we’d like to secure this measure by a constitutional law in Slovakia,” said Radicova. She, however, thinks that the competencies in tax administration and harmonizing the direct taxes should with national governments.

Regarding the issue of a loan for Greece, the prime minister underlined that for an effective resolution of the debt situation, efficient approach at the level of the state is essential, curbing the general government deficit and adopting reforms. “A bilateral-level loan for Greece resolved nothing. Providing further help today is connected with clear conditions and is conditioned on a positive evaluation of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund on whether Greece fulfills its commitments,” added Radicova.
