BRATISLAVA, May 29, (WEBNOVINY) – Members of the Slovak Parliament will attempt to curb the deputy immunity during the 18th parliamentary session next week. The blueprint by coalition lawmakers focuses on deputy immunity in case of transgression, while the group Ordinary People sent to the parliament an even more courageous paper, targeting the immunity protecting deputies from prosecution of criminal conduct. Suggestions to cancel the immunity that protects MPs from prosecution in case of transgressions and criminal attempts appear in the parliament regularly but none of them has resulted in significant limitations so far. Curbing the immunity from prosecution of transgressions requires a simple majority of votes but a constitutional amendment needs the support of ninety lawmakers.

Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska (SDKU-DS) will advocate her revision of the Public Prosecution Act. Zitnanska wants to make contest for posts of prosecutors mandatory, cancel the institute of candidates for these posts, and make public the prosecutors’ decisions, etc. The material bolsters the competence of her ministry in several aspects, which has earned a sharp criticism from the opposition SMER-SD.

Another point on the next week’s program is the cancellation of the so-called Meciar’s amnesties, this time initiated by Christian Democrats. However, the proposal cannot be approved without a helping hand of SMER-SD because it must be supported by 90 legislators.

MPs will debate Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer’s revision of the Press Law. The SaS-nominee highlighted the three most important aspects of the blueprint: it cancels the right to reply; the right to reply and the right to correction won’t be applied simultaneously; and it will be possible to apply the right to reply only if false information distorting the truth was published.
