BRATISLAVA, June 22, (WEBNOVINY) — The Saturday congress of the opposition KDH party in Ruzomberok, according to party Chairman Jan Figel, will be about accountability and a vision for the party for the coming years. For Figel, this will be already the third congress as party chairman. In an interview with SITA news agency, Figel said that still today he maintains that KDH’s potential is greater than its actual achievements. „Although the election result meant a shift in terms of the order of political forces, for the party the change also meant that we went into the opposition. We are at the same time in an unprecedented situation when we have a one-party government in Slovakia after a similar situation developed in Hungary. This is not good for Slovakia,“ Figel said.

„I want to offer [KDH] a vision that will link not only with our previous activities, but also contributions of the party, which fought for and promoted freedom and democracy, and later the European perspective [for Slovakia]. Today the greatest challenge is Slovakia that would be ruled by solidarity and fairness, which can consolidate its public finances so that we do not take away from our children what is theirs, but prepare for the future in a rational and efficient way,“ he said and criticized the fact that with its consolidation measures the government of Robert Fico will burden the economy, small businesses, entrepreneurs, ordinary people, instead of doing what they promised, ensuring security for the people.

According to Figel, KDH can be proud of its work for the past 22 years. He pointed out that no other parliamentary political party in Slovakia since November 1989 achieved anything similar. „It was a struggle against populism, nationalism, abuse of power, and the constitution and internal disputes and disintegration,“ he said.

Figel also pointed out that already at the congress in Nitra in 2009, KDH statutes were changed so that a congress must be organized within six months after parliamentary elections. „I find it an important point that there is a time link between the election result, its evaluation, and a new mandate for the upcoming period,“ he said.
