BRATISLAVA, January 15, (WEBNOVINY) – Christian Democrats and SaS show the strongest ideological differences within the coalition quartet, says KDH leader Jan Figel. “This is also given by the fact that we are a 20-year-old political party and they are new and [it seems] as if they have found out and applied some things only now,” the Transport Minister said for SITA news agency. This is manifested sometimes when convening a session and at times it occurs with topics that already have their own history. Figel mentioned among these the elections of the prosecutor general and state institutions.

Moreover, there are also differences in values promoted by the two parties. “When we have dealt with the law on gambling recently, the biggest dispute has not involved the coalition and the opposition but the Christian Democrats and SaS, when SaS has advocated the mega casino project which we consider a Las Vegas on the Danube River; an unacceptable work that would alter the nature not only of the Slovak capital but also of the country’s culture,” Figel elaborated. In his words, KDH represents traditional Christian values which he perceives as timeless, time-proven, necessary and important for Slovakia as well as Europe.

Every time the Christian Democrats were part of the governing coalition, some of the other political parties came to an end. The first affected party was the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), and the Party of Civil Understanding (SOP), the Party of the Democratic Left (SDL) and the Alliance of a New Citizen (ANO) suffered the same fate later. “I do not know which party is the next one,” Figel said in this respect. Slovakia has been witnessing a trend of single-use political parties, in his view. “Because there have been so many of them in the course of the years to make it a certain rule, something like — let’s try it, anything like this has been here before. And the public realizes then that it is not so much wonderful and quits the single-use party. I do not condemn this. I rather opine that we should be those standard, more capable and more attractive ones to fill this space and offer a more competent and more attractive choice, policy,” Figel concluded.
