BRATISLAVA, November 25, (WEBNOVINY) — Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic said on Thursday that Slovakia will fail this year to meet its commitment to the European Commission to halve the number of deaths on its roads. “The current number is about 305, this year we will not achieve this goal yet.
“The trend in Slovakia is good but it is still necessary to adopt more measures also in the field of regulations, in enforcing road traffic safety of vehicles, education and training,“ said Lipsic at the 3rd year international congress 112 Rescue Forum in Zilina focused on road traffic safety.
Lipsic said that the ministry is working on a new model of an integrated rescue system. The pilot project should be launched at the beginning of next year in Presov with the aim of lowering the accident rate on Slovak roads. Lipsic intends to establish stable regional operational centers, which will integrate all key rescue items – firefighters, health workers, mountain rescuers and police. “We have excellent professionals in all units who do the utmost to save lives but coordination fails from time to time, which means that the model needs to be considerably revamped. The new plan of the integrated rescue system should be approved by the ministry by the end of this year.
Lipsic also said that in October when the police started the project of open behavior towards drivers, six fewer fatalities on roads were registered than in October of last year. The aim of the traffic police is not to fine drivers and molest them with what s/he is to do and what is not allowed, whether a driver has a first aid kit in the car or is using a safety belts. The aim is prevention, underscored Lipsic.
