BRATISLAVA, May 12, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova met with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Janos Martonyi in Bratislava on Thursday afternoon. Their talks did not avoid sensitive issues in bilateral relations, such as the new Hungarian Constitution, which foresees allowing ethnic Hungarians with other countries‘ citizenship to vote in Hungarian elections. Radicova underlined that it would be a great “contribution if the new [Hungarian] election law took international standards into consideration.” According to the position of Slovakia, the effect of the article of the Hungarian Constitution according to which Hungary bears responsibility for Hungarians living abroad is extraterritorial. The prime minister said that Slovakia will adopt “necessary measures” regarding this issue.

Radicova also expects Hungary to reply to the Slovak proposal for an international agreement on dual citizenship between both countries. She added that Slovakia does not have any preconditions for the talks and expects a similar approach from the Hungarian party, so that an agreement between Prime Minister Radicova and her Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orban, can be fulfilled. “Slovakia considers an international agreement the only standard means of dealing with dual citizenship,” said Radicova.

The two politicians also discussed joint projects to support economic and social relations. Prime Minister Radicova expressed appreciation for projects to interconnect energy and transport infrastructure and to open the House of Slovaks in the Hungarian municipality of Mlynky planned for the end of August 2011.
