BRATISLAVA, October 3, (WEBNOVINY) – President Ivan Gasparovic believes that it would be best if both the amendment to Hungary’s Act on Citizenship as well as the revision to the law on Slovak Citizenship passed in response were revoked. The Hungarian norm makes it easier for individuals that have not lived in Hungary and do not have a permanent residence there to obtain the Hungarian citizenship. It is enough if they have Hungarian ancestors. On the other hand, the revised Slovak law has anchored the rule that those who obtain citizenship of another country on the basis of an expressed resolve, will lose citizenship in the Slovak Republic. The president is of the opinion that the abolition of the two pieces of legislation would be reasonable and logical. The situation would return to the state that had been accepted and fine. Gasparovic sees no reason to peak the tension in this field, as he announced on the Slovak Television in the political program “O Pat Minut Dvanast.” The head of the state shares the opinion of Foreign Affairs Minister Mikulas Dzurinda that, in response to a bad revision, Slovakia did not pass a better one. However, he believes that Slovakia could not have done anything else.
