BRATISLAVA, July 2, (WEBNOVINY) — The United States still has certain doubts regarding law enforceability and the state of the judiciary in Slovakia, Chairman of the House of Transportation and Infrastructure Committee John Mica said to Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic, who received members of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress on Saturday.
The politicians talked about the development of investments and business in Slovakia. Many U.S. companies have successfully set up their plants in the country. One of the largest investors is the steel company U.S. Steel Kosice. The president reminded the delegates of further investment opportunities in Slovakia. “Slovakia has many mineral and geothermal springs and advanced spa tourism and it is just this field that provides new investment opportunities,” he noted.
Congressman Mica underscored the importance of a credible business environment. “Certain concerns still persist, chiefly in the field of law enforceability and the state of the judiciary,” he explained. Gasparovic admitted that law enforceability in Slovakia was not perfect but added that the problem was in the environment in which judges work and not in the legislation. “I believe that this problem can be eliminated,” the president remarked.
U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster, a Pennsylvania Republican, praised Slovakia’s participation in the fight against international terrorism. “When I get home to the United State, I will remind my electors that such a small country as Slovakia has deployed over 300 soldiers to Afghanistan. It is a great merit,” he said. Gasparovic said in reaction that the participation in Afghanistan the core international activity of the Slovak armed forces. “The Slovak Republic is a responsible and credible NATO member and fulfills its commitments ensuing from its membership in the Alliance,” he told the congressmen.
The U.S. delegation has visited Europe to debate transport, European safety standards in civil aviation and potential expansion of economic cooperation with representatives of governmental institutions.
